John D. SEVIER m. 8 June 1860 Boyle Co., KY to Julia F. RAINS. They're found in the 1870 and 1880 census records of Boyle Co. with children Isaac T., Elizabeth "Bettie", Joshua T., Georgie A., Julia/Jennie, Harvey M., Mary Frances, William M., and Nannie B.

John D. was the son of Isaac SEVIER (1789 VA - 1859 KY) and Agnes D. CRUTCHFIELD (1793 KY - 1879 KY).

Isaac was the son of William SEVIER (1760 - 1825 KY) and Elizabeth C. TAYLOR (1774 VA - 1856 KY) who m. Mar 1789 Berkley Co., VA (now WV).

William wasn't the son of Valentine SEVIER and brother of Gen./Gov. John SEVIER, but was a relative. However, proof of the exact relationship hasn't been found as far as I know.

My descent is from Isaac SEVIER and Agnes D. CRUTCHFIELD through my grandfather who was a farmer and livestock trader living in Boyle Co., KY. Many many years ago when my father was a freshman at Maryville College in Maryville, TN, my grandfather had him go over to Sevierville to visit the Sevier relatives whom my grandfather kept in touch with. But my father couldn't remember exactly how they were related, though the family was proud of the relationship to John SEVIER.

I would appreciate any information you can share on the descendants of John D. SEVIER and Julia F. RAINS.

Looking for information on John D. SEVIER and Julia RAINS SEVIER, who lived in Boyle County till around 1870 and then migrated to Iowa. John was son of Isaac SEVIER and Agnes CHURCHFIELD. Isaac was son of William SEVIER who it is believed was brother to John SEVIER, the first governor of Tennessee.

Thanks for the quick reply to my posted query. I am thrilled that each day I discover more info on my SEVIER background. With latest info I received out of SEVIER Family History book I had assumed till now that William was son of Valentin. You list a Elizabeth in John and Julia's offspring and that is probably my GGGrandmother, Sarah Elizabeth SEVIER, who was born in Perryville, Boyle County, in 1863. I have all of her descendants through to my grandchildren. Interested in following up on son Isaac SEVIER. Also of note is there is a SEVIER river in Utah and am trying to find out where name came from. Thanks again. Their son, Harvey Mitchell was killed in rendering plant explosion when he was 15 on 18 Jan 1886 in Afton Iowa.

Hi Cathie,
Could Julia Rains be the daughter of Cornelious and Julia Harvey Tarkington? From Boyle Co. KY born about 1842. Julia may hav had a sister Mary and Keziah. If this fits I have the Tarkington line to share.

John D. SEVIER m. 8 June 1860 Boyle Co., KY to Julia F. RAINS who was the daughter of Joshua RAINS and, I think, Sarah CLARK. I don't know of any connection between this family and the Tarkington family.

Alas! Julia was the daughter of Julia Harvey Tarkington and Cornelious Rains. She married a EWING and one of her sons married a Tarkington again! I found this in some family papers, the notation stated that Lapsley Ewing's mother was a Rains and a first cousin to Joseph Maxwell Tarkington of Boyle Co. KY ( Annie Tarkington's father)

Cathie,
Yes,
You have the correct Julia Rains. Do you know anything about her father's family Cornelious Rains, siblings and or parents?
Thanks,
Deb

You're talking about a different Julia RAINS. Julia Cornelia RAINS (1841 - 1941) m. Samuel Warren EWING (1836 - 1902). This Julia WAS the daughter of Cornelius RAINS and Julia TARKINGTON. It does get confusing, doesn't it, with the same names being used repeatedly.

Hi! My name is Lapsley Cornelius Ewing III. Just thought I would let you know that the name has been handed down from father to son & I gave it to my son (born in 1988). It is my hope that it continues to be handed down for many more generations. I was also wondering if you might have any info on the land & home that was owed by the "first" Lapsley C. Ewing? I have heard that it is now the site of "Valhalla Golf Club" & the home is now a historical site. Thank you for any info you may have.

I'm sorry that I can't answer your question re the Lapsley Ewing propety. You'd need to follow the land deeds for that information, or find someone who lives in the area who'd know or could search for you.

I dont know where that property is, but if you are talking about Boyle County kentucky then I recommend you contact the Genealogical society there, Mike Denis. He is most helpful.

Ewing House and Valhalla Golf Club

From what I can gather, Valhalla is located in Shelby County, east of Louisville, and thus would have no connection with Boyle County. However, I find on Kentucky historical marker 1284, that one Daniel EWING was one of the first settlers of Perryville, Boyle County. Joshua Ewing Sr was co-owner of the first blast furnace west of the Alleghenies, in Bath County (Marker 1226). In Trigg County, William Ewing was co-owner of a blast furnace (Marker 1367). Samuel R Ewing purchased a house in Owensboro (Daviess Co, Marker 1478). Finally Baker Ewing was an early settler in what was called "South Frankfort" where the Capitol is today (Marker 1707). I find no mention anywhere of Valhalla and the Ewing home there being an historical site. In any event, there is little connection to the Ewings in Boyle County. Wish I could be more helpful...

Nancy Ewing married Hoyt Baker Pritchett in 1932 not Prichard.
Nancy was my mother. From Hugh Raines Pritchett.
