Pvt Andrew Reed and Lt Joseph Bozarth The Battle of Vincennes, Revolutionary WarPosted 13 Aug 2012 by idogenealogy
Vincennes in the American Revolution By Christopher Light, August 28, 2007 1. Vincennes in the American Revolution Marker Inscription. After taking Kaskaskia on July 5, 1778, George Roges Clark, Acting under Virginia authority, sent Father Pierre Gibault, as his envoy, to Vincennes. Gibault convinced the villagers there to take an oath of loyalty to the Americans. In early August, Captain Leonard Helm arrived to take command of Fort Sackville. On December 17, British Forces under Colonel Henry Hamilton recaptured the Fort. Clark with some 160 men reached Vincennes on February 23, 1779, after an eighteen-day March through flooded country. The move caught Hamilton by surprise. Two days later he surrendered. The Fort, Renamed Patrick Henry, remained in American hands.

possible lineage notesPosted 08 Oct 2013 by idogenealogy

    Hello, Robert H. Neeson,

If I am correct, your William Reed was the son of Andrew Reed and Elizabeth Bozorth. Elizabeth, d/o Joseph Bozorth and Elizabeth _________, was probably born about 1757 in Frederick Co, VA. I have estimated that daughter Elizabeth married Andrew Reed about 1772, place unknown, possibly Augusta County, VA - Monongalia Co, VA by 1776 (later Greene Co, PA)

Census records indicate that Andrew and Elizabeth had at least thirteen children - 5 males and 8 females. I believe these children were:

    1. Hannah Reed - b. est ca 1773 (?Augusta Co,) VA; d. by 1810 c/r; m. William Miller, s/o Christopher, on 14 Sep 1790 in Nelson Co, KY. Named in record as d/o Andrew Reed. Witness to bond: David Bozorth (bro/o her mother)

    2. Abigail Reed - b. 30 Aug 1775(?Augusta Co,) VA; adm. 3 Oct 1838, Christian Co, KY; m. Isaac Hargis on 30 Oct 1792, Nelson Co, KY; surety: Andrew Reed, father of Abigail.

    3. ? James Reed - b. est ca 1777 (?Monongalia Co,) VA; m. Susanna Cox on 29 Aug 1799, Nelson Co, KY

    4. William Reed - b. est ca 1780 (?Monongalia Co,) VA; m/1. Polly Dunn on 17 May 1807, Christian Co, KY; m/2. Polly Sloan on 18 Jan 1815, Christian Co, KY {{Can you confirm this 2/m??}} Note that William named his daughter Abigail and his son Andrew J. Reed. This is a very clear indication that William was more than likely the s/o Andrew Reed and Elizabeth Bozorth.

    5. Daughter - b. est ca 1782 (b. 1765-1784) -

    6. Elizabeth Reed - b. ca 1783 (67-1850), Jefferson Co, KY / VA; m. William C. Hargis, s/o William Hargis & (Martha) Dopsin, on 21 Jan 1799, Hardin Co, KY; named as d/o Andrew Reed; surety: John Reed

    7. Daughter b. est ca 1786 (b. bet 1784-1794) -

    8. Malinda Reed - b. est ca 1788, Nelson Co, KY; d. bet 1840-1843, Howard Co, MO; m. Isaac Dopsin Hargis, s/o William Hargis & (Martha) Dopsin, on 4 Apr 1812, Christian Co, KY; named as d/o Andrew Reed

    9. Caleb Reed - b. est ca 1790. Nelson Co, KY; said to have married cousin Hannah Reed.

    10. Matilda Reed - b. ca 1792 (58-1850), Nelson Co, KY; d. 1868, Howard Co, MO; m. James Means, s/o William Means, Sr and Mary Ann Allison, on 14 Jul 1807, Christian Co, KY

    11. Hiram Reed - b. est ca 1794, Hardin Co, KY

    12. Mary / Polly Reed - b. est ca 1796, prob Hardin Co, KY; m. 20 Nov 1813, Christian Co, KY to James McDaniel

    13. David Reed - b. est ca 1798, prob Hardin Co, KY

Andrew Reed was a witness to his father-in-law will written in May of 1790. After Joseph Bozorth's death about June 1790 in "Nelson County, Virginia / District of Kentucky", his widow Elizabeth married Robert Veazy Alexander 2 Apr 1791 in Nelson County. Her son David Bozorth was surety for her marriage.

Do you have any information on any of these people. I am anxious to learn more about William Reed and Mary / Polly Dunn. Was Polly Sloan his second wife?

I have not been able to discover the ancestors of Andrew Reed; but, if you believe your William Reed was the s/o Andrew Reed and Elizabeth Bozorth, I can give you her ancestors back to 1700. Look forward to hearing from you at your convenience.

    VirJean Potter Bozarth
