John Johnson Jr. (b. Bef. 1620, d. Aft. 1710)

John Johnson was born Bef. 1620 in England, and died Aft. 1710 in Northumberland, VA. He married Ann Goche on Bef. 1640, daughter of Jeffrey Gooch and Anne ?.

Notes for John Johnson:

JOHNSONS OF NORTH NECK (VA.) AND WILKES COUNTY

John Johnson (Jr.) was an adult in 1653, in Northumberland Co.. Va. who patented land and was exempted from taxes for injuries in an Indian massacre; he most likely had two adult children before 1663. We estimate his birth c. 1610-20, most likely in England.  His wife Anne could have been a sister or daughter of Jeffrey Gooch, their marriage date c. prior to 1640. John and Anne Johnson, and possibly children Jeffrey and Anne may have been in the party of 10 that Jeffrey Gooch (elder) transported to America before 1641.

Jeffrey Gooch received a grant of 500 acres at the falls of the James River, present site of Richmond; he later exchanged this land for 500 acres in Nhbl. Co. Va. on the south side of Great Wicommocco River on Vent Creek, later called Cupid's, (Volkins) Vulcans, now called Barretts Creek in Wicommocco Parish.  The Gooch and Johnsons were neighbors.

The daughter of John and Anne Johnson, Anne married Samuel Gooch, the son of John and Katherine and nephew of Jeffrey Gooch.

Jeffrey Gooch gave his 500 acres to his nephew Samuel but applied the law (at that time) of Entailment which required the transfer to male or female heirs.  The latter contested claim by John Gooch, (son of Samuel) of the gift of Samuel to his brother-in-law Jeffrey Johnson Sr.  This leaves some question that the Anne first named above was nee Gooch.  The suit was settled amicably, and they divided the land. The gift of the land to Jeffrey Johnson I, by Samuel Gooch with the provision that John and Anne Johnson, parents of Jeffrey Johnson I and Anne Gooch, wife of Samuel could have the use of it during their lifetime.

In 1685 we find Jeffrey Johnson living with his sister Anne and her 2nd. husband, Peter Byrum, Samuel Gooch having died in 1683.  This leads to the conclusion the John and Anne Johnson and possibly Jeffrey's wife Elizabeth had died between 1665-1683.  There is a note in the transcript of Court Records that reads "Elizabeth, wife of Jeffrey Johnson 19 Nov. 1707" however, this may be a reference to a past event or an error.

Jeffrey Johnson I was born c. 1630-45 and m. Elizabeth (MNU) c. 1660-65; he d. 1725, King George Co., Va. Their children were Jeffrey Jr., and John.  We know that Jeffrey I, was the person granted 232 acres in Richmond Co., Va. 9, May 1711. (Later King George, Prince William and now Fauquier Counties as these counties were created}. This land was known as "Jeffrey's Marsh" and is considerably west of the original settlement in Nhbl. Co., Va.  A part of this land was inherited by another Jeffrey Johnson the nephew of Jeffrey I.  This nephew (son of John) d.1782-83 is not the son of Jeffrey I or the father of Jeffrey Johnson of Wilkes Co., N. C. Jeffrey Jr. was the executor of the Will of Jeffrey I; he is not mentioned for an inheritance but he probably had already received his share of his father's estate.  He is the only Jeffrey Johnson of this time and place to meet all the criteria, and is certainly the father of Jeffrey III who came to Rowan (later called Wilkes) Co. NC in 1763

Jeffrey III and Rachel (Walker) Johnson had the following children: (1 } Winnifred m. William Dodson; (2) George; (3) William; (4) John; (5) Benjamin; (6) Samuel; (7) Chloe, m. William Rutledge; (8) Lewis m. Susanna Chandler; (9) Rachel m. John Parks; (10) Barbara m. (1st John Shumate ?}, 2nd. Richard York; (11) Jeffrey IV m. Rebecca Chandler. Other records show: John m. Petty Sparks; possibly (1 John Shumate m. Martha a daughter, (?} Benjamin m. Delilah F Chandler, Samuel m. Mary Hammon. Samuel, William, George and possibly Lewis were in the Revolutionary War, the first two at King's Mountain,SC.

A Jeffrey Johnson was in the Virginia Colonial Militia and the Revolution; ( however, it appears to have been a cousin.

Rachel Walker was a Midwife or "Doctoress" and ministered to many of the pioneer people. Jeffrey III was a Rev. War Patriot.

William Johnson was b. 6 April 1751 in Prince William Co., Va. (now Fauquier Co.); he m. Mary

Parks b. c. 1750's, Amherst Co., Va. m. c. 1770's, d. 1830, William d. 1835 both d. in Wilkes Co., NC. William Johnson was a Revolutionary War Soldier at the Battle of Kings Mountain. His brother Captain Samuel Johnson was seriously wounded in the battle; William was detailed to transport Samuel home. William also served in many other engagements with the Cherokee Indians and the Tories. William was awarded a pension and several land bounty grants.
