Patience Gilson

1767 - 1831

 

Jonathon Bascom was born May 31, 1767 in Southampton in Hampshire County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Jonathon Bascom Sr. and Freedom Clark. Patience Gilson was born in April of 1775 in Sunderland County, Maine. She was the daughter of John Gilson and Patience Graves. Jonathon and Patience were married in the early 1790’s in Delaware County, New York, and started their family with the birth of Silas Elijah Bascom in 1795.

By 1800 Jonathon and Patience Bascom were living in Walton in Delaware County, New York where they had two more sons, William Bascom in 1803 and Isaac Gilson Bascom in 1808. They had their last child, Erastus Cylvester in 1812. On November 24, 1819 Silas Elijah Bascom married Charlotte Cole in Switzerland County, Indiana.

Silas and Charlotte Bascom started their family in the 1820’s with the births of Patience Bascom in 1823, Hester Ann Bascom in 1825, Elizabeth Bascom in 1828 and Joseph Bascom in 1829. In 1828 Isaac Gilson Bascom married Maria Luther in Alexandria County, Illinois. By 1830 Silas and Charlotte Bascom were living in Switzerland County, Indiana where their family continued to grow with the births of Isaac Reece Bascom in 1830, Erastus Sylvester Bascom in 1835 and Silas J Bascom in 1837. On February 1, 1832 William Bascom died in Fairfield in Hamilton County, Ohio at the age of 29 for reasons unknown. Isaac and Maria Bascom’s family continued to grow at a rapid rate with the births of Alpheus Bascom in 1832, Erastus Sylvester Bascom in 1833, Jonathon L Bascom in 1835 and William H Bascom in 1838. On May 22, 1833 Erastus Cylvester Bascom married Margaret Lyon in Ohio and they started their family with the birth of Catherine Bascom in 1839. Patience (Gilson) Bascom died in 1831 at the age of 56. I have been unable so far to determine a date of death for Jonathon Bascom; however it is believed that Patience was a widow before she died.
