Henry DUDLEY of Virginia

Next Step re DUDLEY Brick Wall Research

Brick Wall: Who are John DUDLEY Parents:
John b. 1796 Frederick County, Virginia*
m. 25 May 1817, Highland County, Ohio to Docia Clevenger [he was 20]
d. 24 Mar 1874 Modoc, Randolph County, Indiana
Henry Dudley Research:
After reviewing every Dudley in Virginia’s 1810 census, Henry Dudley was the most obvious head of family for the next step in the DUDLEY Brickwall Research.

Rev.War Research:
Fold3 Henry Dudley — could he be the no-given-name Dudley buried in Randolph Co?
Conclusion of Henry Dudley Research: Dead end.

Rev.War Research:
Fold3 Henry Dudley from Virginia died in Virginia; his death is part of the records on Fold3.

It is possible the Rev. War soldier buried in Randolph County is the father of John Dudley.
See details on DUDLEYs in Virginia’s 1810 Census page.
* Frederick County is NOT verified as where in Virginia he was born.

Next Dudley Research will be into the other DUDLEYs on the DUDLEYs in Virginia’s 1810 Census page. Will also look into a Quaker connection. The Virginia Clevengers were Quakers so it’s possible the Dudleys were also.

Below are notes made during research.

Ancestry search for a Henry Dudley in 1850 census yielded no results. A Henry Dudley in Warren Co, Ohio — Further checking, he never left this county (from census records). Dead end at this time.

There are no DUDLEYs in “Virginia and Virginians: Eminent Virginians … History of …” Volume 1 or in Volume 2 by Robert Alonzo Brock, 1888.

DUDLEYs no glimmer of a connection in Ohio Early State and Local History, Daughters of the American Revolution. Ohio Society. Dolly Todd Madison Chapter – 1915. And same for The History of Warren County, Ohio: Containing a History of … 1882.

No DUDLEYs mentioned in “A History of the Early Settlement of Highland County, Ohio” by Daniel Scott – 1890 but CLEVENGERs were part of the very first people to settle there.

Neither DUDLEYs or CLEVENGERs mentioned in “The County of Highland: A History of Highland County, Ohio”, … by J. W. Klise, ‎A. E. Hough – 1902.

“Dudley, — Randolph Co. bur. at Windsor Cem.” from Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in Indiana (1949), with … Page 11, 1970. This is also mentioned in “History of Randolph County, Indiana: With Illustrations and …” by E. Tucker – 1882 with Stoney Creek being added to the detail. CONNECTION? WITH FOLD3 HENRY DUDLEY REV SOLDIER. HOWEVER, THIS HENRY REV SOLDIER DIED IN VA (PART OF THE FOLD3 RECORDS).

CLEVENGERs bios are in “A Portrait and Biographical Record of Delaware and Randolph …” 1894; DUDLEYs mentioned are those married to Clevengers. No help on Dudleys prior to John.

A search in all Indiana Newspapers on Newspapers.com in Indiana from 1831 – 1880 yielded no DUDLEY results that match any Dudley in our family tree. Was hoping for John Dudley’s obituary which might yield more information. And newspapers, at least of this entry (5/15/2020) are not available before 1833. And no newspapers from Randolph County.
