From Alexandria Gazette and Virginia Advertiser Monday, August 2, 1875 (pg 2) from Newspapers.com ($)
Joseph Pearman, of Petersburg, a saddle and harness-maker by trade, committed suicide in Chesterfield county on Friday morning by shooting himself through the breast with a shotgun. The cause which led him to take his life is not positively known, but is believed to have been domestic infelicity. He had separated from his wife and family for several weeks.”
Interesting note: On the same page is the executive order announcement of President Andrew Johnson’s death as well as a ‘bio obit’ for Gen. George E. Pickett.
