"My father had left his birthplace in Germany in 1852, after learning the cabinet maker's trade, and landed in NY, where he worked for a year or two in a piano factory. Later he joined some friends he had made, going to the then just newly settled country of IA. They stopped at Davenport, beginning to be the center of a great German settlement, and from here peddled goods about the country on foot. They peddled on foot and by wagon in IA and MN, then all raw country just filling up with settlers, many of whom were refugees from Germany and Sweden whose democratic ideas were distateful to their governments. My father and uncle Herman traversed these plains for some time, then my uncle set up for himself in a small store at Kinderhook and my father, just before the Civil war, came to Macon, Mo., and later to Bucklin, here he bought a stock of goods out of his savings and began business. ..."
