  Cannot find a cause of death. Have researched to see if he was a member of the U.S.Navy--could not find anything. Did find a reference that an "Affidavit of Caleb H Smith, Captain of the 'Annie Buchanan' Hong Kong Dis..." [from a snippet on Google Books]. Further research: the ship, Annie Buchanan, was a barque (also called a bark or barc). A barque is "a sailing ship, typically with three masts, in which the foremast and mainmast are square-rigged and the mizzenmast is rigged fore-and-aft." Another Google Books snippet provided that a Richard Russell on the ship "Success" was awarded for saving a second mate carpenter and 11 crew of the Annie Buchanan. This implies that the AB sunk but no records have been found yet to confirm this. Could this be the Australian prison ship, Success? In the time period of Caleb's death, there were major discords between two Chinese factions. But there was also a cholera epidemic in Shanghai during the months around April of 1862.
