The BASCOM Ancestor Struggle

And it is ALL their fault!

My maternal great-great-grandmother was Hester Ann BASCOM, born 2 May 1829 in Hamilton County, Ohio & died three days after Christmas on 28 December 1911 in Sullivan County, Missouri. She married Peter MILLER on 10 Mar 1857 in Indiana. One of their daughters, Mary Catherine MILLER married John Linn SINCLAIR who became my great grandparents.

Hester Ann’s father was Silas but I believe I’ve had the wrong one recorded for years — well at least for four or five years. When I started tracing back from Hester, I found multiple Jonathans and even more Thomases.

Historically I understand why people used the same given names for a number of years but boy does this cause a poor little old family genealogist to want to throw things trying to figure out who is who.

I did have Hester’s father as Silas Elijah BASCOM who fought as a Union soldier in the Civil War along with his two brothers. Now I think that Hester was his SISTER. What aggravates me the most? I should have caught this a LONG time ago. This is what happens when you get sloppy in your research.
